Facebook, as you’ve probably noticed, is everywhere. And with that ubiquity comes a massive audience just waiting for your web app. Whether you’re looking to make things easier for your current users, or you have the perfect idea for a Facebook-only application, there are a few things you’ll need to know to get started. So you want to build a Facebook application and reach literally millions of users. Well luckily, writing an application using the API isn’t too hard to learn. Getting Started

In order to install Facebook applications, or indeed to write your own, you need a Facebook account. You’ll also want to install the Developer application—this lets you create your own Facebook applications, as well as monitor their usage and configure various settings. You’ll also need your own web server; Facebook apps run direct from your own server—which means that you can write them in whatever language or framework you prefer. We’ll be using PHP in our examples, but the principles are the same for any language.

The Facebook Platform

Facebook have done a pretty good job of documenting the fundamental components of their platform over on their developer site. The platform consists of three core parts:

API – The API defines the various methods through which you can interact with Facebook. If you’re not familiar with the idea of an API, take a look at some recent Digital Web articles: APIs and Mashups for the Rest of Us and Hacking on Open APIs.

FBML – Facebook Markup Language is a custom markup language based on various bits of HTML. It’s similar to Coldfusion or ASP.NET’s tag-based syntax, and is used to define the pages in your application.

FQL – Facebook Query Language is SQL for Facebook. A powerful query language for situations where there are no existing helper methods in the API, or handy tags in FBML, to do exactly what you need.

FBML is basically the HTML you know and love, so we’ll include a heading and a stylesheet. The link element isn’t permitted and the @import rule isn’t supported either, so the simplest solution is to use a server-side include.

We’ll be stepping through the development of a simple application which will demonstrate usage of FBML and the API.

As well as the core documentation, Facebook also makes available a set of useful tools and resources for developers. The tools are particularly useful for debugging raw API calls or tweaking FQL. The resources section contains official libraries for PHP and Java, with links to unofficial libraries for ActionScript, Cocoa, Coldfusion, .NET, Perl, Python and Ruby, and there is also a growing community wiki.

A typical page on Facebook is quite complicated, with lots of different elements on the page. Via FBML and the API you can influence most of these so it’s worth getting familiar with the terminology used before you get started. If you know your Profile from your News Feed then you’re good to go!

How to write a FaceBook Application in 10 minutes

Writing F8 apps is where it’s at right now. Everybody knows it. The userbase is huge and now we have a (free) API to. Everything is good….but the documentation.

I spent a day writing my Sudoku Facebook application yesterday. I already had the sudoku javascript widget ready to go – the time was spent wading through pages of documentation and downloading toolkits that (as it turns out) I didn’t need.

As far as I can tell, Facebook allows you to create applications that appear to the user in 2 different areas.

The profile. This the ‘main user page’ as far as Facebook is concerned. Here is where your main summary details are displayed and your comments wall. It would be great to have your widget displayed here, but the big limitation is that applications that use javascript are not allowed here (You must use FMBL, the facebook version of HTML). Too bad for me. What we can do is display a small ad to take the user to the Canvas page.

The Canvas page. This is an entire page that your application gets to use (you can have multiple pages if you want). On these pages you can choose to display content from another website through an iframe, so that is what we’re going to do.

Developing a Facebook Application for absolute beginners

With more than 300 million active users and 50% of them using it every day (source), Facebook can be an interesting way to make some viral marketing. One of the most effective ways is developing an application users (and users friends – and friends of users friends – and…) will use every day.

Build Your First Facebook App

So you want to build a Facebook application and reach literally millions of users. Well luckily, writing an application using the API isn’t too hard to learn (for the basics, anyway). In this tutorial we will write a Facebook app that generates a random quote to display on the user’s profile.

Getting Started

It’s worth noting that the Facebook API is available to a number of languages, all listed on the Facebook Developers Wiki. I will be using PHP 5 for this tut. You will also need to download the PHP 5 Client Library, which I’ve included in the SRC files. All code featured here will be in the index.php file.

Step 1: Initialize Your App

The first step to get a Facebook API key, which allows your app to retrieve information from Facebook. Go to the Facebook Developer Application and click the “Set Up a New Application” button. Pick a name, agree to the Terms & Conditions, and you’ve got your API. Now you need to set up your canvas page name and callback URL.

Your canvas page is the application area within Facebook; the name is added to the URL and will look like this: http://apps.new.facebook.com/[YOUR APP NAME]. The callback URL points to the server hosting the app files. To set these up, from the “My Applications” page click “Edit Settings” on the right hand side. You will see the fields to fill in both, as I did in the screen shot below. While there are lots of other options, none are necessary for this tutorial. Click ‘Save’ and you’re now ready to build your first Facebook app. Facebook even provides you with some start up code. I’ve cut out the extra stuff and gave you only what you need to initialize your app…

This is fairly straight-forward code. We create a Facebook object using our API key and app secret, which was given to us when we created the API key. The first thing we do after that is get the user id of the logged in user. This will be valuable to us if we were do things get the user’s name, the user’s friends, etc. I’ve also added the $callbackurl to make it easier to link to images or other files, as Facebook does not allow relative linking.

Step 2: Writing the Application

If we don’t make specific Facebook calls, this is just like writing a php application. Below is our code.

This is all you need to do to print to the canvas page. One thing to note is the way we create CSS. We cannot call a file like style.css- we actually have to include the CSS in the HTML. This is so our CSS doesn’t interfere with Facebook’s. You should also know that when styling divs, you can only uses class, not id. The code we created will produce something like this:

Step 3: Creating the Profile Box

Finally, some Facebook specific stuff. The code below is necessary to add our quote to the user’s profile, granted they are displaying our app in their profile. In our app, I’ve added the follow code right below $i= rand(0, sizeof($quotes)-1);

You need to make a set of web design mockups for your client. You’d like to find an easy way to show these mockups in clean XHTML and CSS code, because plain JPGs don’t convey the full sense of the design, and sliced tables are evil. In fact, let’s forget table slices ever existed.

This article is for people who need to produce valid, standards-compliant mockups quickly, with the graphics tools they already use. This is not a production technique for people who want to get the most benefit out of (X)HTML by creating structural, semantic markup. Creating structural, semantic markup, as A List Apart and most standardistas recommend, still takes time, thought, and hand-coding. 

WYSIWYG graphics editors such as Fireworks, GoLive, and ImageReady allow you to generate HTML code, but the exported code tends to use tables or absolute positioning. That’s so 1999. So what, then, can these programs do in terms of producing valid and useful code? More than you think. I’ll show you an easy way to produce mockups with Photoshop, prepare them for the web with ImageReady, and clean up the code afterward.

Background

I must admit, Fireworks was a major part of my design arsenal until I started taking accessibility and standards compliance seriously, and I don’t think I’m alone here. The problem I ran into was that I could only export HTML code using tables, when what I really wanted was relatively positioned div elements. Only with ridiculous hours of coding and copious quantities of caffeine could you convert such a table to relative divs, and this just steals more time from when you could have been designing more mockups or sleeping. So why start off with a sliced table at all? What I needed was a way to generate clean relatively positioned divs—or, barring that, code that was close enough that it wouldn’t take aeons to make it play nice with W3C standards. These days, this is surprisingly straightforward with ImageReady.

Make ImageReady CSS-ready

Adobe Photoshop CS ships with a web-focused sidekick: ImageReady CS. Adobe Fireworks is great for vector applications, but less so for raster work. Conversely, ImageReady is perfectly suited for raster work, but less so for vector work (although that’s changing). Using ImageReady, you can export slices as absolutely positioned divs, which can be easily transformed into relatively positioned divs.

This means you can start off in Photoshop to do all your complex masking, fades, Illustrator vector art, filters, etc., and then switch to ImageReady to slice up your layout. You’ll want to be sure that your layout is aligned to the top left; don’t try to center it just yet—that’s a job for CSS later on. Using ImageReady, you can style your navigation menu items (unless you’re doing that with pure text / CSS) and set rollover states. (For a production layout, you would probably shy away from Adobe rollovers and actions in favor of your own JavaScript or CSS rollovers, but for mockup use, these rollover states should suffice.

Slice it up

Use the Slice tool to create your slices. Once you’re finished use the Slice Select tool to select and rename each section. For example, you may have a header that will become a div tag later on. ImageReady would really like to call this “Yourfile_1_01,” but you’ll save yourself some work by giving it a logical name from the start, like “header”. You will use this later on when editing your CSS. The same goes for the content area, any side columns, the footer, and other areas you may want to define.

Jump back and forth between designing in Photoshop and ImageReady until you’re ready to test out your design in a browser. Then, in ImageReady, go to File › Preview In › (insert favorite browser here). See whether your slices look and behave as intended, and modify your optimization settings accordingly. Exported slices will result in JPG or GIF images inserted into div tags with img tags; later, you may want to insert some of the images as background images for the individual divs instead.

Exporting HTML & CSS

Set your output settings: select File › Output Settings › HTML and change the settings to your liking. Note that you can opt to generate XHTML code. Select “Next” and check the settings in Saving HTML Files.

Select “Next” again; this brings you to Slices. Here you can choose to “Generate CSS.” Next to Referenced, you’ll see a dropdown menu that allows you to choose By ID, Inline, or By Class. Select By ID. You can also get detailed with slice naming conventions if you’re so inclined.

Export your mockup to (X)HTML/CSS using File › Save Optimized As, and choose a location that makes sense to you. Note that ImageReady will create an /images subdirectory in the same location where you save the HTML file. (Line wraps marked » —Ed.)

List Amount of Post Revisions

WordPress has a great revisioning system that auto-saves your post as you’re working with it. It also allows you to save different drafts and go back to an older one if you want to. Although this is great, the number of revisions often gets carried away, which takes up some database space.

Custom Display of Links (Blogroll)

I didn’t like the way my links came out with wplistbookmarks or any other built-in function, so I needed a way to have total control about the way my wordpress bookmarks were displayed. In this first part of the tutorial, we’ll draw the actual film strip itself using Photoshop’s shape tools, then we’ll save it as a separate document so we can easily re-use it any time we want without having to draw it all over again. Add A Realistic Rainbow To A Photo In Photoshop

In this Photoshop photo effects tutorial, we’ll learn how to easily add a rainbow, and even a double rainbow, to a photo! As we’ll see, Photoshop ships with a ready-made rainbow gradient for us to use. We’ll learn where to find it and how to load it in. The other night, I was sitting outside staring up into space, hoping for a glimpse of the annual Perseid meteor shower, when the thought hit me – what if the wedding couple was up there dancing in the stars? Well, so much for the meteor shower, as I raced back inside to play around in Photoshop and see where the idea would take me. Not surprisingly, creating this “dancing in the stars” effect (no relation to a certain tv show with a similar name) is very simple. In fact, a few of the steps are borrowed from our previous Create A Starry Night Sky tutorial, so if you’ve worked through that one, some of this will already be familiar to you.

Add Bubbles With A Custom Bubble Brush In Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, we’ll learn how to add bubbles to a photo by creating our very own bubble brush! We’ll draw a simple bubble, save it as a Photoshop brush, customize its behavior using the Brush Dynamics options in the Brushes panel, then use the brush to paint bubbles into a photo! I’ll be using Photoshop CS5 throughout this tutorial, but any recent version of Photoshop will do.

Colorizing Images With Gradients In Photoshop

We’ll see how easy it is to create our own custom gradients in Photoshop so we can colorize our images with any colors we choose. As always, we’ll be using the adjustment layer version of the Gradient Map so we avoid making any changes to the original photo, and so we can easily adjust the intensity of the effect when we’re done!

Add A Lens Flare Effect Non-Destructively With Blend Modes

In this Photoshop tutorial, we’ll learn how layer blend modes make it easy to add a popular lens flare effect to a photo without making any permanent changes to our image. We’ll start by adding the lens flare normally to position it exactly where we want it, then we’ll undo the effect, add a new layer, re-apply the lens flare instantly using a handy keyboard shortcut, and finally, we’ll blend the lens flare into the image using one of Photoshop’s most common and widely used blend modes.

High Key Glow Effect In Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, we’ll learn how to create a high key glow effect, which is a fancy way of saying we’ll be applying a glow only to the highlights in an image. This effect works especially well with wedding portraits since it’s great for adding a romantic, magical look to your photos, and wedding portraits usually contain lots of bright white areas to work with. We’ll see how to easily select just the highlights in an image using Photoshop’s Color Range command, then we’ll copy the highlights to their own layer and create the glow effect using a blur filter and one of Photoshop’s layer blend modes designed for lightening images. Finally, we’ll combine layers into a layer group and use a layer mask to limit the areas where the glow effect is visibile. It may sound like a lot of work, but once you know how to do it, the entire effect can be completed in just a few minutes! I’m using Photoshop CS4 here, but any recent version of Photoshop will work.

Halftone Pattern Photo Border

In this Photoshop tutorial, we’ll learn how to create a fun and simple halftone pattern photo border using a couple of Photoshop’s filters, a basic selection tool, a layer mask, and a layer blend mode. We’ll be using Smart Filters to create the effect, which will allow us to easily make changes to the photo border after we’ve created it without having to undo or redo any steps. Smart Filters were first introduced in Photoshop CS3, which means you’ll need at least Photoshop CS3 if you want the added benefits that Smart Filters offer (I’ll be using Photoshop CS4 myself), but this effect can be created with any version of Photoshop, including Photoshop Elements, so don’t lose hope just because you don’t have CS3 or CS4. If you’re using Photoshop CS2 or earlier, or Photoshop Elements, simply ignore the few steps that deal specifically with Smart Filters and apply regular filters to the layer as you normally would. The only thing you’ll be missing out on is the added flexibility and editability that Smart Filters give us.

Create Cinematic Panoramas With Photomerge In Photoshop CS4

In this Photoshop tutorial, we’ll look at how easy it is to create a seamless, cinematic-style panorama from multiple images using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS4. Photoshop has been somewhat capable of creating panoramas for quite a while now, but it wasn’t until Photoshop CS3 came along with its dramatically improved Photomerge command that its ability to stitch photos together really began to shine. Photoshop CS4 takes things even further with some additional new features, including the ability to remove vignetting from photos, a common problem with wide angle images that used to result in panoramas having different brightness values as you moved across them from left to right.

Gritty, Overprocessed Photo Effect

In this Photoshop photo effects tutorial, we’re going to look at how to give a photo a gritty, overprocessed look to it with extreme levels of contrast and sharpening, noise and washed out colors. Part of the effect will be created with a technique normally used as an advanced way of sharpening an image, but in this case, we’ll be taking things well beyond the boundaries of common sense. An Easy Way To Find Neutral Gray In An Image

When it comes to color correcting images in Photoshop, removing color casts from the highlight and shadow areas is usually pretty straightforward since it’s quite easy to find the brightest and darkest areas in an image. But what about the midtones? How do you find that area in the image that’s supposed to be neutral gray? Usually, you guess and hope for the best, since Photoshop doesn’t seem to have any way of easily pointing out those midtone gray areas for us. Or does it?

Reducing Wrinkles With The Healing Brush In Photoshop

In this tutorial, we’ll look at the Healing Brush, by far the best photo retouching tool in all of Photoshop, and how we can use it to easily reduce distracting skin wrinkles in an image. Notice how I said “reduce”, not “remove” wrinkles. One of the most common retouching mistakes is to completely remove the wrinkles from a person’s face, smoothing the skin out so completely that a person in their 40′s, 50′s, 60′s or later looks like they’ve barely aged a day since they were a teenager. Colorizing A Photo With Multiple Colors In Photoshop

In this Photoshop photo effects tutorial, we’re going to learn how to colorize a photo using multiple colors. It’s an effect I’ve seen used quite a bit in ads for photo printers and for color calibration software. The idea is simple. Take a single photo, divide it into multiple sections of equal size (usually four sections), then colorize each section using a different color, or a different shade of the same color, to create interesting results. With the photo printer ads, for example, each section of the photo is usually colorized using one of the four main colors of ink (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). With the color calibration software ads, each section of the photo is tinted with a slightly different color to show how the same image can look different on different monitors when they’re not properly calibrated.

In this tutorial, we’ll look at a fast and easy way to add a more traditional soft focus lens effect to an image. The nice thing about creating this effect in Photoshop rather than with an actual soft focus lens is that Photoshop gives us complete control over the final result.

How to Create a WordPress Theme from Scratch

This tutorial will look at taking a HTML/CSS template and turning it into a functioning WordPress theme. There is so much you can do when creating your own theme we couldn’t nearly cover it all. So, we’re going to look at how themes are structured, creation of the core files and splitting up that index.html file.

The structure of a WordPress theme is fairly simple, I like to start with the CSS file. It details everything about the theme for WordPress to use. You then have index.php – it’s simply the template file you’re using with the PHP template
tags included. Included with that is header.php & footer.php, files that are used across the whole site. Now most themes don’t use just four files and that’s because WordPress allows you to use template files to layout different content. There are the defined layout files, such as archives.php and single.php. However you can also create your own, say, if you wanted
to make a page that had a totally different layout to the default.

Because this is such a large topic we’re splitting it into a two part series – this part making a simple but functioning theme from a standard HTML & CSS template, and the second part will look at adding more of the advanced features.

Adobe After Effects is primarily used for creating motion graphics and visual effects. After Effects allows users to animate, alter, and composite media in 2D and 3D space with various built-in tools and third party plug-ins, as well as individual attention to variables like parallax  and user-adjustable angle of observation.

Both After Effects and some non-linear editing systems (NLEs) are layer-oriented, meaning that each individual media object (video clip, audio clip, still image, etc.) occupies its own track. In contrast, other NLEs use a system where individual media objects can occupy the same track as long as they do not overlap in time. This track-oriented system is more suited for editing and can keep project files much more concise. The layer-oriented system that After Effects adopts is suited for extensive effects work and keyframing. Although other compositing packages—especially ones that employ tree or node workflows, such as Apple Shake—are better suited to manage large volumes of objects within a composite, After Effects is able to somewhat counter the clutter by selectively hiding layers (using the Shy switch) or by grouping them into pre-compositions.
