Owing to the ubiquity of countless historic bridges, arches, and gateways throughout the continent, all the structures represented on the Euro banknotes are entirely fictional syntheses of the relevant architectural styles, merely designed to evoke the landmarks within the EU, representing various European ages and styles. For example, the €5 banknote has a generic rendition of the Classical Period, the €10  of Romanesque, the €20  of Gothic, the €50  of the Renaissance, the €100  of Baroque  and Rococo, €200 of Art Nouveau and the €500  of Modern style. However, in a survey conducted by the Dutch NCB (De Nederlandsche Bank), only 2% of the population was able to identify the theme of the €5, and 1% correctly identified the €50 theme. While the designs are supposed to be devoid of any identifiable characteristics, the initial designs by Robert Kalina were of actual bridges, including the Rialto bridge in Venice  and the Pont de Neuilly in Paris, and were subsequently rendered more generic, the final designs still bear very close similarities to their specific prototypes; thus they are not truly generic.

Money Talks By Chris Barbosa

Well, in the end everything comes to money. Yes! But in this case it’s about an old dream that i have of one day designing some paper currency. It’s not for the money (G-d forbid!). It’s that i really love the intricate details of paper currency and the coulours. Take for example the former dutch currency, the ‘Gulden’, the slovenijan currency, the Finnish and….you name it. They are so beautiful. It really takes some hard work, a good knowledge of what can be achieved. I do agree with the Dutch monetary institution when they wrote a whole procedure on how the currency should look like and what it should be treated like and here i quote: “A banknote is a product for daily life. It changes hands many times a day, and is carried close to or even on bodies! Therefore, a note should first of all have an easily recognisable denomination and an attractive, contemporary look. In short, it should be designed for the public to like it.”
